I think contrails needs to stay for two reasons.
1. Distinguishability. Contrail colors were for a long time part of empire's identity.
2. Discoverability. In many cases, the only actually visible presentation of the ship is its contrails.

What I'd change is I'd make own ship's contrails smaller.

The size of the contrail is determined by the diameter of the contrail emitter in the design.

The size is calculated in old style designs.
