I love hearing your responses. Straight frank honesty is the best. Indirectness always leads to misunderstandings.

Sex has never been a required act in SoH. Nobody ever has to do it. No NPC ever suggests it. No creature ever does it in front of you. I recommend not dwelling on it.

FWIW, I plan to submit a new package to the ESRB, given the updated graphics.

Maybe they'll answer me this time. hehe

Assuming laughter, is Shores of Hazeron really that hopeless? ;)

There's been some rough bugs lately but we're getting past that. Things will firm up nicely for a while, now that the brute force work on gen 4 animals is past. A quick glance shows that weeks of mind bending work resulted in an increase of around 45,000 lines of code, enough to fill two 500 page books. There's bound to be a few bugs in there. I'm weeding them out as quickly as I can.

Nobody is holding a gun to my head to do this. I don't even get paid. I could save a tremendous amount of money, get fat, travel, spend time with my family, and live happily ever after, if I bailed on this project. I considered it a couple of times while working on the new animals; they had some tough moments and I knew Shores of Hazeron could not continue without them; failure meant the end.

Shores of Hazeron is something I do because I want to do it. My heroes are science fiction writers. It's my way of being a science fiction writer too. Maybe somebody will nominate me for an award some day, haha. :D

Once in a while, I find myself hoping this project will make enough money to pay the server bills. That would bring some relief but it doesn't drive me. I don't actually think about it that often.

What I enjoy is creating this stuff without having to answer to anyone. I have created something huge that noone has ever made before. And nobody is likely to repeat it anytime soon, because of the vast amount of work required. It doesn't fit the development model for main stream game developers. And I'm not done yet.

This freedom of expression trumps a presence on Steam. The only reason I continue to entertain the idea of publishing Shores of Hazeron on Steam is their terms are agreeable to me.

There really is nothing else like Hazeron out there.
It might not explode into popularity due to being such a niche production, however it has made a significant impact in at least a few lives.

I appreciate it for sure, even with all the quirks.

Not just Hazeron, Gravity Well too. Just talked to someone on twitter the other day: Gravity Well was the first PC game they played, and they were wondering about trying to recreate a modern version of it themselves.

Gravity Well, lol. Its amazing how many people contact me wanting a free copy to this "abandonware" that they used to play as a kid. People have even asked for the source code.

Maybe if half of those people actually paid for the game it might still be in production.

One person told me they begged their parents to buy a license but they would not waste their money on "shareware".

So you see, my battle for credibility did not start yesterday, even though I've made millions off of the innovative software I have developed over the years.

i don't think shores of hazeron as a WHOLE is hopeless! i love this game and im very proud of you

but oh man, dude, your robo homer simpson porn is just some primo silliness. 100% honesty here, i sincerely doubt it will do anything but hinder your efforts to make this game be taken more seriously. not because youre putting adult content in, but because the models and the dialogue are so... uh, really, really crude, my man. like, the game has always had charmingly wacky character models, but putting them in this... situation...  which takes itself SO seriously despite how ridiculous it is... makes it practically self-parody.

its pretty iconic, i gotta say

LOL! Thank you so much for that; it made my day.

One thing that inspired me to go cartoon rather than trying to do photo realism was this clock hanging on my office wall. It has been an icon at Software Engineering for many years, going way back to the "early days".

I'm glad you saw the Homer in my new people.

That is all the more serious I meant, in terms of people taking Shores of Hazeron seriously. I didn't mean that I wanted people to treat it like a game with a serious theme. It was more a plea for me to be taken seriously as a software developer. We all seek affirmation.

In the real world, I am hardly a serious person. Instead I tend to be overly confident, obnoxiously loud mouthed and sarcastic. It's probably why I'm a pilot, live in the country like a hermit, and have no friends, lol. :D

hehe, that is an incredible clock. i do definitely agree that cartoonish designs are more interesting, although i'm going to miss that vacant targoss stare!

...hey, can we mate with targoss?

looks like i have some science to do!

Update: did not sex targoss. however, after playing around with the new stuff, i have to say, haxus...

this is the COOLEST character creation thing i have EVER seen. all the chromosome stuff, and the potential to have a million different weirdass subspecies, all the choices, all the OPPORTUNITY, it is INCREDIBLE. i cannot WAIT for more stuff to be added!!

just a note: i think sliders rather than number inputs would be better (both for keeping you from putting in '999' on everything, and also to make it easier to put 999 for everything), and also if you make the head really weirdly shaped the hair gets all weird and funky and will probably crash people
