When a player starts Shores of Hazeron by creating a new empire, they must define the DNA of their race. This establishes the indigenous race of the homeworld on which they start. One of the goals of an emperor is to spread their race into the galaxy.

When new players join the game for the first time, they may choose to join an existing empire rather than build a new one. A homeworld in their first empire is chosen automatically; the capital city is chosen if the empire has one. The new player's body assumes the race DNA of their home city when they spawn for the first time.

This should be considered when an emperor selects the capital city of their empire.

Indigenous Race

The indigenous race is the race of sentient creatures that inhabits the wilderness of a habitable world. Only habitable worlds have indigenous races. Not all habitable worlds have an indigenous race. Frontier worlds do not have indigenous races, even if environmental conditions are habitable.

The player who creates the first town square on a planet establishes the indigenous race DNA for the planet. The indigenous race DNA of the planet becomes that of the player who creates the town square. The indigenous race DNA never changes on a planet in an active solar system, even if all the cities are conquered by another race.

A ringworld is divided into seven zones, corresponding to the seven day/night bands. Each zone has its own indigenous race DNA. When you create a town square on a ringworld, the indigenous race DNA is established for the section of the ring you are on, not the entire ringworld.

Indigenous race DNA is lost from all worlds in a solar system when the system is reset due to inactivity. This occurs after a solar system, that has no cities, has not been visited for a while.

Citizen Race

The citizen race is the race of sentient creatures that inhabits a city. Each city is populated by a single race of citizens.

The player who creates the town square of a city establishes the race DNA for the citizens. The citizen race DNA becomes that of the player who creates the town square. When this is the first town square on the planet, the indigenous race of the planet is also established.

Cities populated by indigenous people may gain population due to people moving into the city from the wilderness. Indigenous people welcome cities populated by their own kind.

Cities populated by non-indigenous people do not gain population from the wilderness. Indigenous people do not welcome cities populated by aliens.

Citizen race DNA can change for abandoned cities. A city is considered abandoned after the population rises above zero then returns to zero. A newly established city is not considered abandoned until it has had at least one citizen.

The citizen race DNA of an abandoned city is changed to the DNA of the next person to move into the city. On a habitable world, that may be an indigenous person moving into the city during a city report. The new citizen could also arrive aboard a spacecraft, as a passenger or crewman.
