Turbo lifts (or elevators) do sometimes break. The turbo lift on a ship can work for days and then suddenly start breaking. It is not a universal issue, and making a new ship will likely work.
I had similar issues back at the end of universe 5, the turbo lift started to act weird and broken. For example moving but leaving me behind in a void without air. As far as I remember the issue resolved itself after a while and maybe even came back again, but this was a few years ago now
By the way, the title of your post, what are you referring to when you say "connection problems"?
